Spirit of Our Ancestors Film Festival

February 2 @ 12:30 pm - 3:30 pm CST

The Mobile Public Library invite you to a special showing of the acclaimed Netflix documentary Descendant

Join us at Virginia Dillard Smith/Toulminville Branch Library for the Spirit of Our Ancestors Film Festival. We will be screening the movie Descendant, followed by the latest episode of 90 Minutes of 60 MINUTES which features an update on the Descendants.

About Descendant (PG-1h 49mins/2022): Documentary filmmaker Margaret Brown (“The Order of Myths”, “The Great Invisible”) returns to her hometown of Mobile, Alabama to document the search for and historic discovery of The Clotilda, the last known ship to arrive in the United States, illegally carrying enslaved Africans. After a century of secrecy and speculation, the 2019 discovery of the ship turns attention toward the descendant community of Africatown and presents a moving portrait of a community actively grappling with and fighting to preserve their heritage while examining what justice looks like today.

90 Minutes of 60 MINUTES: Descendants of Africans on slave ship on reconciliation with family of Alabama enslaver

Descendants of the enslaved Africans brought to Alabama on the last known slave ship met with the family of the ship’s financier to discuss reconciliation.

This event is free and open to all. No RSVP required.
